Experience

Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO), Lucas Heights, NSW, Australia

Safety and Reliability Analyst, June 2010 – Present

Responsible for safety assessments of components and systems, HAZOP and FMEA assessments, engineering and safety support to projects using risk assessment and reliability techniques. Ensuring that significant hazards or operational risks are managed and minimised.

Key Projects

•Safety Assessment of Active Ventilation System - led the safety assessment which included a Failure Mode, Effects and Criticality Analysis (FMECA) and subsequent risk assessment. Successfully identified potential safety issues at the design stage of the system, allowing for any issues to be addressed early on.

•Safety Review of a Cyclotron Facility and Hot Cells – led a safety review of the hot cell shielding and public impact of cyclotron operations. Using Microshield modelling and a safety assessment I was able to confirm the adequacy of the hot cell shielding, thus allowing the use of the cells for radiopharmaceutical production.

•Safety Assessment of Radioactive Greenhouse – responsible for the safety review of the risks associated with activities within the planned Greenhouse. I identified areas where risks where deemed unacceptable and recommended measures to ensure that doses to workers were as low as reasonably possible and that risks were tolerable.

•HAZOP of Waste Immobilisation Plant – led the HAZOP identified process deviations, assessed the hazards and made recommendations to ensure that the risks associated with the project were as low as reasonably achievable.

•HAZOP of the Charcoal Drying Vessel and Waste Inspection Chamber – led a multi discipline team and assessed the proposed vessel and chamber in multiple HAZOP reviews. The dispositions verified by myself included key safety improvements within ANSTO and ensured safe operations of the plant.

Worked within the Intermediate Level Radioactive Waste and Nuclear Safety Case teams. Responsible for analysing storage and characterisation techniques for various streams of radioactive waste and constructing dose models for packages. Involved with hazard and risk evaluation of modifications with a significant impact on nuclear or radiological safety.

Seconded for seven months from Hinkley Point A to Oldbury Power Station. Successfully assessed safety submissions to the Site Approvals Committee and assisted with reactor operations following outages. Led the assessment of land planned for sale as part of de-licensing for new nuclear build. Responsible for promoting and leading the introduction of Mini-Stores for storage of Intermediate Level Waste on the site.
