• Provided the full range of Speech-Language Pathology services across multiple levels of care, including acute care, sub-acute rehabilitation, and outpatient settings with young adult, adult, and geriatric veterans.
• Independently developed and provided screening, assessment and treatment services to veterans with motor speech, voice, swallowing, language, and cognitive-communication impairments resulting from a variety of etiologies such as degenerative neurological disorders, stroke, acute medical conditions, and iatrogenic conditions.
• Performed and interpreted Modified Barium Swallow Studies.
• Provided care to medically complex veterans with tracheostomies and to veterans on ventilatory support, including evaluation and use of one-way speaking valves.
• Provided care to veterans with total laryngectomies, including supervised placement of tracheoesophageal voice prostheses, post-operative stoma care education, and training and fitting of heat moisture exchange systems.
• Led small group treatment and education sessions for veterans with aphasia and veterans with cognitive communication disorders.
• Developed individualized home programs for veterans with language, motor speech, voice, swallowing, and cognitive-communication disorders.
• Increased awareness of the Speech-Language Pathologist’s role in the acute and sub-acute setting through multiple presentations to interdisciplinary teams.
• Pursued ongoing education via the GRECC (Geriatric Research Education and Clinical Centers) lecture series.
• Provided assessment planning and execution, treatment planning and implementation, and stimuli and probe development for veterans with aphasia during two four-week sessions of PIRATE (Program for Intensive Residential Aphasia Treatment and Education).
• Participated in the management of veterans with head and neck cancer, geriatric veterans, and veterans at end of life during interdisciplinary team meetings.
• Developed experience in selecting and programming high-tech AAC devices. Trained veterans in the use of this equipment.
